Understanding and Using Email Aliases
What is an Alias?
An email alias is an additional email address that delivers messages to your main mailbox.
- Think of it as a nickname for your real address.
- You don’t need to set up a separate account or login — all emails sent to an alias end up in your main inbox.
For example, if your main mailbox is jane.doe@example.com, you could create aliases like:
- support@example.com
- billing@example.com
- contact@example.com
Any email sent to one of those addresses will appear in Jane’s inbox.
Why Use Aliases?
- Organize communication: Separate addresses for sales, support, or personal use, without managing multiple accounts.
- Privacy: Give out an alias instead of your real address when signing up for services. If it gets spammed, just delete the alias.
- Flexibility: Use aliases for temporary projects, campaigns, or events.
How Aliases Work in Paxmail
- Each alias is linked to a real mailbox.
- The alias does not have its own storage or login.
- Sending mail “from” an alias may or may not be allowed depending on your domain’s configuration (SPF/DKIM/DMARC policies). In many setups, you can still choose the alias in your mail client’s “From” field.
- You can create multiple aliases pointing to the same mailbox.
How to Add and Manage Aliases in Our UI
- Go to the Aliases section in your account settings.
- Click New Alias.
- In the From field, enter the alias address you want to create (for example, support@example.com).
- To create a catch-all address that receives all mail for your domain, enter @mydomain.com in this field.
- To create a catch-all address that receives all mail for your domain, enter @mydomain.com in this field.
- In the To field, enter the email address (or multiple addresses separated by commas) that should receive the messages. This is usually your main mailbox.
- Click Create Alias to save.
From now on, any mail sent to that alias will arrive in the chosen inbox.
Tips for Using Aliases Effectively
- Use aliases to track where your email address was shared (e.g., shopping@example.com, news@example.com).
- Disable or delete an alias if it starts receiving too much spam.
- If you need to send mail as an alias, configure your mail client to use that address in the “From” field.
✅ Summary: Aliases are extra email addresses pointing to your mailbox. They’re easy to create, great for organization and privacy, and can be managed entirely through our UI.
